Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5 update is now available.
Driving leadership across virtual, physical and cloud deployments, the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5 update harnesses the scalability and performance optimization of the next-generation of server processors. Also included are enhanced virtualization capabilities that enable greater guest density, improved interoperability with Windows environments, and new tools and utilities enhancements.
The RHEL enhancements include:
-
Hardware enablement: Significantly improved performance, price/performance, scalability, and reliability are made possible with support for new hardware architectures and processors. To optimize our customers' ability to get the most from a new generation of hardware, this update supports the Intel®Xeon® processor 7500 series (formerly code named Nehalem-EX), AMD Opteron™ 6000 Series platform (formerly code named Magny-Cours), and IBM's new POWER7 processor. These new platforms leverage Red Hat's history in scalable performance with new levels of core counts, memory and I/O. The result is a very dense and scalable platform balanced for performance across many workload types. To increase system reliability, Red Hat supports Intel's expanded machine check architecture, CPU fail-over and memory sparing.
-
Virtualization performance: Improvements in virtualization and virtual performance make Red Hat Enterprise Linux an increasingly attractive choice for building out virtual machine environments.
-
Interoperability: With this release, there is improved interoperability with Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 with an update to Samba, extending Active Directory integration. This enables file and print access and simplifies managing file and print resources across platforms.
-
New and enhanced tools and utilities: Notable features in the debugging tools and utilities are enhancements to SystemTap, enabling pre-determined kernel trace points and there are better monitoring and thread debugging with updates to the GDB debugger. Additional improvements and enhancements can be found in the Release Notes of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5.
As with all Red Hat Enterprise Linux updates and our continued commitment to the lifecycle of RHEL, application compatibility and certification is fully maintained, meaning the broad portfolio of certified applications for Red Hat Enterprise Linux applies to the new update so there is no need to re-certify.
